Product designer Uderbekov Daniyar presents a screen made of natural wool felt with acoustic properties that fold into different shapes. The felt, crafted from natural sheep wool through wet felting (using a combination of friction, soap, and water to make felt out of wool fibers), provides sound insulation, effectively damping loud noises. The screen’s construction uses biodegradable materials, including wool, wood, and special dye. The cream-white structure features one splatter-painted side, combining both vibrant and muted colors. Notably, it lacks metal mechanisms, hinges, or opening systems, relying solely on the flexibility and strength of the felt for movement.

Measuring 3000 x 1750 mm and weighing 40 kg, the wool felt screen by Uderbekov Daniyar can be arranged in various configurations, such as a headboard, a phone booth, or a traditional screen. 3D signs, inspired by ancient Eurasian symbols, represent fertility, luck, goodness, and home and adorn the screen’s four doors. The structure showcases one unique design element on the last leaf of the screen, which features three convex spheres. This detail pays homage to the Soviet science fiction film Moscow-Cassiopeia, explicitly referencing the teleport on the planet Alpha. This tribute reflects the designer’s childhood fascination with the film. The Kazakhstan-based designer’s screen combines functionality and cultural references in an environmentally friendly design.

Inspired by the Gold of the Sarmatian Leaders exhibition at the Pushkin Museum in summer 2023, this low coffee table reimagines the material culture of that ancient era. Using archaic materials—felt (humanity’s earliest textile) and travertine stone—it reflects the aesthetics of nomadic luxury.

A Symbolic Design for 2025, the Year of the Snake
Inspired by the Lunar calendar, where 2025 marks the Year of the Snake, this chandelier pays homage to the snake's significance in Eastern astrology as a symbol of wisdom, insight, and adaptability. The design also draws from the ancient Greek legend of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing. The tale of the snake wrapping around Asclepius' staff and the discovery of a life-restoring herb speaks to the harmony of nature and humanity's capacity to learn and adapt.

An Ancient Pine Branch: The branch, once part of an 80-year-old pine tree from the shores of Lake Burabai in Northern Kazakhstan, is a story in itself. Toppled by a hurricane, the branch was naturally weathered by the lake, wind, and sun, shedding its bark to reveal a beautifully aged texture.

This chandelier was printed on a 3D printer, made of biodegradable PLA plastic, a branch wrapped around a snake taken from a dried pine tree. The lamp has five lamps with a standard socket.

Kazakh designer Daniyar Uderbekov unveils his creation, the Danik’s Felt Armchair furniture collection, designed and manufactured with sustainability in mind. Inspired by the rich heritage of a nomadic lifestyle and drawing from the iconic design of the yurt, this collection captures the essence of a natural, warm, and inviting environment sought by modern individuals amidst the ever-changing challenges of contemporary life.

Each armchair and ottoman’s construction utilizes just a single large piece of consciously-sourced felt, ensuring a cohesive finish wrapped around a durable 3D-printed frame. And with a 100-120 years lifespan, the pieces offer longevity of use. At the end of their service life, they can be disposed of hassle-free, as all materials used in their production are biodegradable, ultimately benefitting the environment by enriching the soil.

At the heart of Daniyar Uderbekov’s collection are the Woi-Lok chair and ottoman, which pay homage to the Kazakh people's traditional culture while embracing the yurt's distinctive aesthetics. The chair’s self-supporting wooden frame, crafted using 3D printing technology, combines minimal material usage with structural rigidity, resulting in its unique visual form. The chair's upholstery is made from natural felt, a durable, breathable material that communities have utilized for centuries since antiquity. In an era where sustainable design choices are paramount, felt stands out as an ethical option as it is responsibly sourced from animals. Further, the designer has also utilized DIY principles, and each piece of the Danik’s Felt Armchair collection can be easily assembled like a construction set, requiring no additional tools.

The floor lamp is made of fine felt. The lamp ‘shade’ has no frame. The lamp stands on three legs: two are made of pine Y-shaped roots, and the third is a glowing leg 3D-printed from recycled plastic bottles. The floor lamp represents a synthesis of the modern eco-conscious narrative and archaic materials known since ancient times.

"Roots + Clouds" Chandelier

The roots are from the shores of Lake Burabay, naturally sculpted by water over 20+ years. I first saw these fallen pines in 1999—they were already there, weathered by time.

The white glass shades ("clouds") descend to touch the roots—a metaphor for "distant descendants meeting distant ancestors."
- The "descendants" (clouds) are ethereal, not yet real.
- The "ancestors" (roots) remain only as heritage.
Their union in the present creates light, symbolizing hope for the future grounded in the past.
